2022 Al-Aqsa Mosque storming
On 15 April 2022, Israeli forces stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque using tear gas shells
and stun grenades in order to stop Palestinians from throwing rocks at police officers.[5][6][7][8][9]
The Al-Aqsa compound is under the custodianship of Jordan
and administered by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf.
Palestinians believe that Israel is trying
to change the status quo in various ways,
for example,
by allowing Jews to pray in the Temple Mount.[10][11][12]
According to the Islamic waqf authorities, t
he Israeli incursion began before dawn prayers.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated
that their police were intent
both on seizing rocks and stones,
which they say Palestinians
had in turn stockpiled in anticipation of violence,
and to disperse the crowd.[8]
According to Ynet news
, the police entered after Ramadan morning prayer
to break up stone-throwing
in the direction of the Western Wall.
[13] Al Jazeera reported that Israeli soldiers
also “climbed on the roofs
of buildings surrounding Al-Aqsa Mosque”,
evacuated the courtyard
and closed most of the doors leading
to the compound.[14]
Over the course of the armed police raid,
around 160 Palestinians were injured
, including a waqf guard shot in the eye
with a rubber bullet,[8]
4 women, 27 children, and one journalist.
Approximately 400 people were arrested;
the majority of them were released later that day.[9][15]
Three Israeli police officers were also wounded.[9][4]
Concerns were raised
about possible excessive use of force by Israeli force
